Metal Casting has been in Alexandria, Egypt for about one hundred years. It is the process of melting scrap metal and transforming it into useful industrial parts. Some are sold for consumers directly; like Darbuka drums “Musical instrument” and home accessories, while others are used by factories to produce high precision products and tools like spare parts of machines and ships. There are many stages that the metal goes through in order to reach its final form. The whole process could take a duration between 1 and 3 days; depending on the needed final product. Firstly, scrap metal is collected in a big furnace with temperature that reaches 1000 C inside, while in the workshop the temperature is 60 C. Scrap metal is turned into the furnace until it completely melts into a homogenous liquid mix. The liquid is then poured into different moulds according to the needed shapes. Moulds are then left to cool down and finally, metal parts are extracted. Work at the metal casting workshops starts at 10:00 in the morning and lasts all day long until 10:00 at night. and of course the workers have their rest between the scraps metal. Work is not limited to adults, there are many children that come everyday to help their parents and inherit the skills of this craft
